Going green
Posted on Sep 16, 2019I know I wasn't the only person who was deeply affected by the 2018 IPCC report on the climate crisis. For many I spoke to, it moved the topic from something needs to happen, to: we all need to do something right now. The report described how we are on track to a 3C temperature rise by the end of the century and noted that “Temperature rise to date has already resulted in profound alterations to human and natural systems, bringing increases in some types of extreme weather, droughts, floods, sea level rise and biodiversity loss, and causing unprecedented risks to vulnerable persons and populations.”
This year we have started at Radiant Law to respond with two initiatives:
- We have gone carbon neutral as a company by offsetting our carbon emissions (mainly from transport) with certified carbon reduction projects.
- We are separately planting a tree for every deal we support for our clients. We've planted thousands of trees so far.
If we are going to meet this challenge, we are going to need strong political leadership, massive financial investment, mass electrification and nuclear, solar and wind. The point of this post is that while we are all waiting for our leaders to do what is really needed (at least in the UK, US and South Africa where we operate), there are things that are easy to do right now. If you would like to do something similar, here is who we used:
I am extremely grateful to Andy Wilson of Logikcull who talked on twitter about their tree planting initiative and who directly inspired what we are doing (they work with National Forests). If there are other organisations you would recommend, please let us know!
